What is Stamp Duty?
What it is
Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) is a tax paid to HMRC when you buy a property in England or Northern Ireland over the nil-rate threshold.
When you pay
Your solicitor collects SDLT at completion and submits it to HMRC within 14 days. It is due on the date of completion, not exchange.
First-time buyers
If you've never owned a home, you pay no SDLT on the first £300,000. This relief applies to properties up to £500,000.
